Curriculum Links

The character and narrative of Blue Arrow can be applied as an educational focus for a number of curriculum areas.

  • ART - activities such as story stones, representations in the forms of drawing, painting, collages and dioramas, give children access to learning about and synthesising their knowledge of the bird, her habitat, needs, life cycle and characteristics.

  • ENGLISH - tasks such as recounts, narratives, poems or oral storytelling let children explore their cassowary knowledge and associated habitat and life cycle learning by entering an imaginative space which is located in a local, accessible and familiar environment. ICT's can be embedded by creating podcasts, digital books or stop motion representations of the text.

  • SCIENCE - Blue Arrow is a focal point for a number of Biology topics such as habitats, environmental change, life cycles and physical characteristics, especially given the cassowary's particular physical quirks as a flightless bird which is raised by the father.

  • SUSTAINABILITY - Blue Arrow is an endangered local example of the impact of humans, feral animals and habitat changes on their environment. Topics such as land clearing, agricultural and urban development and water/reef health can all be taught using Blue Arrow as the focal point. Students can be encouraged to become active citizens by supporting local initiatives and cassowary conservation.
