About Cassowaries

The Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) is one of three cassowary subspecies, and the only one found in Australia. Cassowaries belong to the ratite group of flightless birds, which includes emus, rheas and ostriches.

The word Cassowary comes from the Papuan words for horned 'kasu' and head 'weri'.

The Southern Cassowary is considered endangered in Australia due to habitat loss and resulting car accidents and dog attacks as cassowaries come too close to human habitation.
